Four permanent programmes, delivered throughout the year

The association organises and brokers practical, hands-on training for members at every stage of a career. Workshop subjects follow the real direction of the trade: electrified and hybrid powertrain servicing and the safe handling of high-voltage systems; advanced fault diagnostics and the correct interpretation of manufacturer data; hydraulics and pneumatics on heavy and agricultural machinery; welding and repair techniques for modern materials; air-conditioning and refrigerant handling; and the documentation standards required for warranty and inspection work.

Alongside technical content, we run sessions on the working knowledge that technicians are rarely taught formally: reading a collective agreement, understanding a payslip and overtime calculation, preparing for a competence examination, and presenting one's skills when applying for a new position.

Training is arranged in evening and weekend formats wherever possible so that participation does not depend on an employer releasing a worker from a shift. The association negotiates group rates, applies for training funding where available, and keeps a register of members' completed courses so that competence can be evidenced when it matters.

Most employment problems are far easier to resolve early. The association therefore operates an advisory route that members can use at the first sign of difficulty: an unclear contract clause, an unpaid overtime supplement, a change to shift patterns, a warning letter, a proposed change of duties, a workplace injury, or the start of change negotiations at an employer.

Our representatives explain the applicable rules in plain language — statutory employment legislation, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, working time and annual holiday provisions, and the terms of the collective agreement that applies in the member's workplace. Where a matter requires formal handling, the association assists the member in preparing the documentation, accompanies them to meetings with the employer where appropriate, and refers the case onward to qualified legal counsel or the competent authority when that is the correct step.

The association also works preventively, meeting employers and workplace representatives to correct recurring problems at their source rather than case by case. Every enquiry is treated as confidential; personal information is processed only as described in our Privacy Policy.

The association arranges regular member evenings, workplace visits, seasonal gatherings and family-friendly events that bring together workers from different employers and different parts of the sector. These occasions serve a purpose beyond sociability: they are where a young technician meets an experienced colleague, where a workplace problem in one garage is recognised as a pattern across several, and where isolated workers find a peer network.

Career guidance is offered individually to members considering a change of specialisation, a move into supervisory or training roles, or a return to study. The association helps members map their existing competence, identify the qualification that would open the next step, and find the route to obtain it.

For members facing illness, injury, bereavement, redundancy or family difficulty, the association provides practical guidance on the benefits and services available in Finland, assistance in dealing with authorities and insurers, and — no less important — contact with colleagues who will not let the matter be faced alone. Support is extended to members' families where circumstances require it.

Automotive and machinery work involves lifting equipment, pressurised systems, rotating machinery, high-voltage components, solvents, fuels and exhaust exposure. The association treats occupational safety as its first practical duty and runs a permanent programme around it.

The programme includes safety training for members and workplace representatives; guidance on risk assessment, personal protective equipment, lifting and jacking practice, ventilation, chemical handling and high-voltage isolation procedures; and structured safety walkthroughs carried out together with employers who invite them. Findings are documented, corrective measures are agreed in writing, and follow-up is scheduled.

The association further supports members in reporting near misses and defects without fear of reprisal, cooperates with the occupational safety authorities where a matter requires it, and promotes consistent industry standards for repair quality, documentation and customer safety — because a professionally completed repair is itself a safety measure for the public.
