Our history
How the association came to be
Mikkelin auto- ja konealan ammattiosasto ry was founded by automotive and machinery workers who shared a single observation: the work of the trade had become more technical, more regulated and more demanding, while the individual worker's ability to influence conditions had not grown at the same pace. Diagnostics, electrified drivetrains, hydraulic systems and increasingly strict safety legislation all raised the professional bar. Organising collectively was the natural response of a trade that has always solved problems by working together.
From the first meetings, the founding members established three principles that still govern the association today. First, the association would be a workers' organisation, directed by its members and not by any employer or commercial interest. Second, it would combine representation with education: defending rights matters, but so does raising competence, because a well-trained trade is a trade that can defend itself. Third, it would operate openly, with documented decisions and published accounts, so that trust would rest on evidence rather than on reputation alone.
Those principles were written into the association's rules and registered with the Finnish authorities. Since then, the association has grown from a local circle of mechanics into an organisation serving members across Finland, administered from its registered office at Itämerenkatu 21, 00180 Helsinki, Finland, and reachable by telephone at +358 10 538 2800 and by email at info@mikkeliautokone.blog.

Our legal status in Finland
The association is a non-profit registered association — a rekisteröity yhdistys (ry) — established and operating under the Finnish Associations Act (Yhdistyslaki). The association has legal personality, may hold property and enter into agreements in its own name, and is liable for its own obligations. Members do not assume personal liability for the association's commitments.

The association is non-profit in the strict sense: it does not distribute profit or other financial benefit to its members, its board or its officers. Any surplus generated in a financial year is applied to the association's stated purposes — training, advocacy, member welfare and safety work — in accordance with its rules and the decisions of the general meeting.

Member solidarity
A difficulty faced by one member — an unfair dismissal, an unpaid wage, an injury, a period of illness — is treated as a matter for the whole association, not a private misfortune.
Transparency
Decisions, finances and representation are documented and reported to the membership. Members may request the records of any general meeting and the annual financial statement.
Continuous education
We cooperate with vocational institutions, employers and equipment suppliers so that members can access recognised training throughout their working lives, including mid-career retraining.
Governance & leadership
How the association is administered
Supreme decision-making power rests with the members in the general meeting. The annual general meeting approves the financial statement and the annual report, decides on the discharge of liability for the board, adopts the action plan and budget for the coming year, sets the membership fee and elects the executive board. Extraordinary general meetings may be convened by the board or at the written request of the membership in accordance with the association's rules.
The executive board is responsible for the practical administration of the association between general meetings. It comprises the chairperson, the vice chairperson and ordinary members elected from the membership, supported by a secretary and a treasurer. The board prepares matters for the general meeting, oversees the association's finances, approves programme activity, maintains the member register and represents the association in dealings with authorities, employers, vocational institutions and partner organisations.
Member representation committees carry the association's work into specific fields: a training and competence committee, an occupational safety committee, a member welfare committee and a communications group. Each committee reports to the board, keeps written minutes and proposes measures for the annual action plan. Workplace representatives act as the association's direct link to individual workplaces, raising local issues and assisting colleagues in the first stages of a dispute.
Accountability is enforced through documented practice rather than assurance alone: board minutes are recorded and archived, the financial statement is prepared annually and audited by the elected auditor or performance auditor, and every member may address the board directly through the association's official channels, info@mikkeliautokone.blog and +358 10 538 2800.
